Where the standard was set

Before Barlow Construction, Lewis spent many years working on some of North Yorkshire's great estates, including Swinton Park near Masham, Rudding Park near Harrogate and Newby Hall near Ripon.

Estate work is its own discipline. The buildings are old, often listed, and anything new has to sit next to work that has been standing for two or three hundred years. There is no hiding a poor joint or a stone set on the wrong bed.

It is where Lewis learned to work on old stone buildings, listed and unlisted: how solid walls breathe, why lime matters and how to repair stone so the repair does not stand out.

We still take on estate and period property work, and the habits formed there go into every job we do.

Swinton Park, Masham

Swinton Park is a castellated country house in its own parkland outside Masham, with a round tower, battlements and a stable court, extended and remodelled over several centuries.

Working across an estate like this means stonework, roofs, lime pointing, joinery and outbuildings, often on listed fabric and always to a standard the house has held for a very long time. It is the kind of work Lewis did for many years, alongside Rudding Park near Harrogate and Newby Hall near Ripon.

The same approach goes into a farmhouse in the Dales or a stone cottage in Thirsk: find out how the building was made, repair it the same way, and leave it better than we found it.
